Hullo! Happy St Andrews Day everyone! Hope you’re all enjoying your day off! (aye right) – anyway, no faff this week, lets just get on with the SEO News Blast……..
Webmaster Tools Security Glitch
There was an outbreak of sheer terror within the SEO community this week when the security of Google’s Webmaster Tools was compromised – with old users re-verified on accounts where they had previously been denied access. It goes without saying that this was a very serious issue, the carnage that could be wreaked by anyone with a little dollop of maliciousness, even in a short space of time, could be catastrophic for a website. Google has responded saying that only a ‘small set’ of accounts were compromised and it is taking measures to insure that this doesn’t happen again. Hope not for all our sakes.
Online PR under the Kosh
Online Press Releases have always been a bit of a love/hate area for SEOpros – on one hand they can serve a purpose in building a brand profile or getting some real news out there, whilst on the other, the PR websites are chock full of absolute trash that serve no purpose whatsoever. It’s enough to give Lord Levenson sleepless nights. Anyway, this was highlighted this week by a fake PR Web release claiming Google had acquired Wi-Fi provider ICOA Inc. for $400m. This release was then distributed and appeared on many publications including the Associated Press and Techcrunch. The fake release was thought to be part of a stock scam, shares in ICOA leapt on the announcement. The release was quite cunning in that there have been rumours for years that Google is keen on building its own Wi-Fi network, this just wasn’t the real deal.
